A GREEN PLEDGE

A roadmap to becoming a carbon-neutral studio

Superstring’s carbon footprint compared to other game studios is tiny - but only because Superstring is a tiny operation. We’re remote, we have no offices or building-related overheads, we have no canteens, coffee machines or water coolers, we have no commuting requirements, we have little in the way of equipment or energy requirements, our games are digital-only (right now), and we can’t afford to fly around the world to conventions and meet ups. We’re indie af, basically.

But that doesn’t mean we’re not worried about our carbon footprint, or that we don’t want to do our bit to safeguard our futures.

This, then, is our first step to becoming carbon-neutral; a pledge to sustainability regardless of how much bigger we might get from here on out. The commitments laid out below will be followed as the teeny-tiny team we are today, but also honoured with every new project, every new hire, and every step we take to becoming a bigger studio, and making bigger games.

The intention here is to have our titles brought to market in a manner that leaves the smallest mark possible upon the planet. In fact, we pledge that each project will be Carbon-neutral, and that if reducing, reusing and recycling are not enough, we will offset any remaining carbon we’ve unwillingly brought about by nature of our development work.

With the above in mind, we pledge that:

  • Each project / financial year will be carbon-audited to calculate our emissions

  • Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle to bring down these emissions in any area we can

  • In areas we cannot reduce to 0 via the methods above, we will offset via Tree-planting or other officially-credited offset schemes.

  • No NFTs or blockchain-related systems or features will be used in our games

  • A flat refusal to work with pro-NFT artists and creators

There is more we will be able to do in the future as the studio grows, but this feels like a solid starting place. For more on achieving a carbon-neutral workplace - specific to games - I definitely recommend checking out UKIE’s Green Games Guide, which is chock-fulla great information and advice.

And all this really is just the start. There are bigger, more interesting strides we’re making on this front, but that’s a conversation for another day….
